๐ฟ What is a Website Carbon Footprint?
Every time someone visits a website, data is transferred from servers to their device. This process consumes electricity, which often comes from fossil fuels, producing carbon dioxide (COโ) emissions.
The carbon footprint of a website is the total COโ emissions generated per visit, measured in grams of COโ equivalent (gCOโe).
๐ Calculation Methodology
Our analyser estimates carbon footprint using a combination of factors:
- ๐ฆ Data Transfer โ Size of all assets loaded
- ๐จ HTTP Requests โ Number of server requests
- ๐ผ๏ธ Images โ Number and size of images
- ๐ Scripts โ JavaScript and CSS files
- ๐ค Fonts โ Web fonts loaded
- ๐ Third-party โ External resources (analytics, ads, etc.)
โก Emission Factors Used
Each factor is multiplied by a carbon intensity value based on global average grid electricity:
- ๐ Data Transfer: 1.5 gCOโ/MB
- ๐จ HTTP Requests: 0.8 gCOโ/100 req
- ๐ผ๏ธ Images: 0.5 gCOโ/10 images
- ๐ Scripts: 0.6 gCOโ/10 scripts
- ๐ค Fonts: 0.3 gCOโ/10 fonts
- ๐ Third-party: 0.7 gCOโ/10 requests
Based on data from Website Carbon and Green Web Foundation.
๐งฎ The Formula
(DataMB ร 1.5) +
(Requests รท 100 ร 0.8) +
(Images รท 10 ร 0.5) +
(Scripts รท 10 ร 0.6) +
(Fonts รท 10 ร 0.3) +
(ThirdParty รท 10 ร 0.7)
Each component is measured in grams of COโ per visit.
๐ณ Tree Equivalence
To make the impact more tangible, we convert COโ emissions into tree equivalence โ how many trees would be needed to absorb that COโ in a day.
= ~54.8g COโ per day
๐ Why This Matters
๐ The Numbers
- ๐ ~4.6 billion internet users worldwide
- โก Internet uses ~7% of global electricity
- ๐จ Digital carbon footprint = ~3.7% of global emissions
- ๐ Growing ~6% per year
๐ What You Can Do
- โ Optimise images and assets
- โ Use green hosting
- โ Reduce third-party scripts
- โ Enable caching and compression
- โ Choose sustainable web design
